The Convex and Concave Paintings were developed from the Breathing Painting. While the Breathing Painting is a kinetic work in constant motion, I wanted to capture the moment of inhaling and exhaling in the breathing cycle in the format of a monochrome painting cast as relief objects.
The result is that both the convex and concave paintings are challenging to focus on because of their slightly curvy surfaces and smooth monochrome white. It is an exciting paradox that one can hardly see the painting before one’s eyes.
The Convex Concave Paintings, 2010, measure 100 x 100 x 10 cm.
Materials: Plaster, reinforced with wood and coconut fibre, and paint.
